Winter Approaches - Do You Need Snow Tires?

As winter approaches and pumpkin flavors give way to cinnamon, there's another change taking place. Around the time of the first snowstorm (and immediately after), many drivers swap their summer tires for a set of winter tires. It's a good choice for anyone who lives in an area prone to large snowfalls, even for those who use all-weather or all-season tires. This is because no one tire can provide maximum performance benefits every season. The components that make a tire perform great in a frigid environment often make that same tire perform poor in a hot environment. If you're looking for the best winter performance or you often travel to areas where there is a lot of snow, it's a snow tire that will come out on top.

Snow Tires VS Non-Snow Tires

Non-Snow Tires

  • Below 0 temperatures cause these tires to deflate faster
  • Rubber hardens and becomes less pliable in frigid temperature, so you lose grip

If you live in an area where the temperature is expected to be below 45°F during winter, it's recommended that you install snow tires on your vehicle. Livingston winter temperatures often vary between 20°F and 43°F depending on the month.

Winter Tires

  • Piable in low temperatures, providing superior grip and handling
  • Designed to provide maximum performance in snow and slush
  • Extend the life of your summer tires by virtue of you not using them for 4-6 months

Please note that for traction on ice, studded snow tires are required. As of writing, New Jersey allows you to use studded tires between November 15th and April 1st. Check the State of New Jersey website for the most current information and changes.

Choose Snow Tires for Superior Winter Driving

It may seem a no-given that tires designed for winter weather conditions will outperform tires not made exclusively for winter conditions. For those in higher elevation areas, all-season tires can work fine. But if you're in an area prone to snow and low temperatures, Livingston Tire Co. recommendeds installing snow tires for the easiest winter driving experience.
